The 65-year-old school was named after the minister’s mother

Established in 1958, the school is located at 52 Siddheshwari in Ramna Thana area. The school is located next to the main campus of Vikarunnisa Noon School and College on Bailey Road. The number of teachers in the school is 16. The number of students is about 300.

The 65-year-old Moghbazar Girls High School located in Siddheshwari area of the capital has been renamed. Now the school is named after the mother of Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastgir Gazi.

The new name of the educational institution is ‘Gazi Samsun Nesa Girls High School’. The current president of the management committee of the school is Gazi Golam Asria, son of jute minister. He is the Managing Director of Gazi Group.

Former president of the management committee of the school SM Saifuzzaman has expressed his anger about the new name. According to him, the name of this ancient school founded by Ispahani group has been changed to ‘Kaidakanun’.

However, member secretary of the school’s management committee and acting head teacher Mobareka Khaled said that they all wanted this new name for the development of the educational institution.

Dhaka Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Chairman Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar said that the name of the school has been changed in accordance with the rules.

Established in 1958, the school is located at 52 Siddheshwari in Ramna Thana area. The school is located next to the main campus of Vikarunnisa Noon School and College on Bailey Road. According to the school authorities, the educational institution is now under the MPO. This means that school teachers receive the entire main part of their salary from the government. Also get some allowance. The number of teachers in the school is 16. 14 of them belong to MPO. And the number of students is about 300.

According to school and management committee sources, the president of the management committee of the educational institution from 2013 to 2018 was Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj) Constituency Member of Parliament and current Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastgir Gazi (Bir Prateek). Discussions about changing the school’s name began then. But then this discussion did not go far. Later, Dhaka’s district education officer Benazir Ahmed served as the president of the management committee for some time. After him, the President of Jatiya Sramik Jot SM Saifuzzaman became the President. He was in charge till October 2021. Gazi Golam Asria has been serving as the president since then.

Sources related to the school say that on December 7 last year, Acting Headmaster Mobareka Khaled applied to the Ministry of Education for a new name for the school. After five days of the application, the school was visited by the officials of the education board on December 12. They submitted the report to the ministry on January 2 this year. On March 13, the secondary and higher education department of the Ministry of Education agreed to change the name of the educational institution to ‘Gazi Samsun Nessa Girls High School’. Last Monday, the Board of Education issued the final decision order regarding the new name.

In this regard, Dhaka Education Board Chairman Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar told Prothom Alo on Wednesday yesterday, ‘After following all the procedures, the application regarding the new name was made. In view of the application, the inspection report of the board has also come positive. The Ministry of Education has given consent to the new name. In light of that, the name of the school has been changed according to the rules.

According to Dhaka Education Board sources, interested persons have to deposit 30 lakh taka in the school fund in case of renaming any secondary level educational institution. However, for this, a decision (resolution) has to be taken in the management committee of the concerned educational institution. The opinion of the people of the surrounding area should be taken. By doing this, you have to apply to the Ministry of Education to change your name. Then the ancillary works are done.

Saifuzzaman, the former president of the school’s management committee, complained, ‘What is in the law is not a big deal. What happened in changing the name of this school is not morally justifiable. Because, it is an ancient, traditional and well-established educational institution. The school is founded by Ispahani Group. It was they who donated the property to establish the school. The name of the school may be changed if there is a compelling reason. But what is that reason here is not clear. Anyone who wants to establish an educational institution in the name of a family member can do so. One why, there is no objection to doing 10. But the question is why the name of the school established by someone else’s donation was changed by law.

Yesterday at around 11:30 pm, it was seen that the new name board had not been installed at the school. The school plaque has the same name as before. Went inside the school and talked with acting head teacher Mobareka Khaled. When asked, he initially did not want to admit the change of name. He countered, ‘How did you know?’

Later Mobareka Khaled said, the change of name is a pleasure. Because, the location of the school is not in Moghbazar. So many people go to Moghbazar when they say Moghbazar Girls High School. Apart from that, the school once had a very good reputation. The institute also received the best school award. But later the reputation was somewhat damaged. So they want the educational institution to be radically changed. For these reasons, they want to change the name. The current president of the management committee is doing a lot for the development of the school. He did a lot of work including decorating the school hall with his own funding. All in all, they think that if they (the president’s family) take the lead, the educational institution will turn around again.

A few banners-festoons-posters were seen around the school. It is written with the picture of the current president of the management committee, ‘The overall developmental renovation work is going on with the personal financing of Mr. Gazi Golam Asria Sir.’

Attempts were made to contact Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastgir Gazi several times over the phone yesterday to discuss this matter. But he did not pick up the phone. Tried to contact him at his office in the Ministry at around 3:30 pm today Thursday. However, his office informed that he has left.
